One sided, sharp lower back pain the radiates to one side of the buttocks during pregnancy?

I am about 19 weeks pregnant, and have barely begun to show, and have only gained a minimal 5 pounds. For a few weeks now I have had a sharp pain in my lower back toward my right side inbetween my lower back and buttocks, that radiated to the right cheek. The pain is sharp, and it makes sudden movements and walking difficult. I feel like I am 8 months pregnant when this pain comes on. It is not eveyday that I feel this, but when I do, It is really uncomfortable. This is my second pregnancy and I felt this same pain with my daughter but that was when I was 6 or 7 months pregnant and had gained and enormous 30 some pounds by then. I don’t know why I would feel this way now. Secondly, my pelvis feels very weak at times. Most often the weakness accompanies the pain in my back. My pelvis will feel weak and achy. Any idea why more lower body is feakin’ out so early on.

My lower back did this with both of my children. I was told it was my sciatic nerve. Baby, uterus or both bump or rest on it and that’s what causes it. No clue why it’s earlier this time, perhaps just because it’s your 2nd pregnancy. Things seem to happen earlier with 2nd and 3rd and so on. Mention it to your doctor, for sure, and take it easy until they tell you what it is.

Ahhhh…the blessed sciatic nerve….
Talk to your OB. They should be able to give you something for it.

I agree it sounds like sciatic nerve problems. Very common in pregnant women, people with tight hamstrings, and overweight people. I would definitely talk to your doctor and try to find a massage therapist in your area that does pregnancy massage. It will help, I promise. If your health insurance has chiropractic benefits, you may be able to get the massage covered.

i cant offer anything because im pretty sure im going through the same thing. this is my first pregnancy (4 months along) so i wasnt sure if pains like this were normal. im really appreciative of others who seem to know what this is and that are giving their input… because i did not feel like asking my doctor about the “intense pain in my butt cheek”. :o)

I agree, it sounds just like sciatic nerve pain. I had it with my first pregnancy and it started at around that same time, before I was even showing. It can be very painful, but unfortunately there is not really a cure. You can try heat and ice if it is really bothering you and there are some stretches that can help. Check with your insurance and see if they cover prenatal massage or physical therapy because many do and that can help, plus they will give you suggestions for which stretches to do at home.
As far as the weakness in your pelvis it could be related or it could just be because it is around this time in your pregnancy that your hips begin to spread and the ligaments are stretching to prepare your body for labor. This can cause pain sometimes and that weak feeling as well because your ligaments are not holding your pelvis in place as tightly as they usually do. I know that it is disconcerting, but it is not a sign of anything bad.
