Exercises to relieve pain of herniated disc?

My boyfriend just recently had an MRI done, and he has a herniated disc. His back has bothered him off and on for the past year. Over the last 2 mos. he has had very bad lower back pain, and his tail bone area is very swollen. So of coarse he went to the doctors had the exam, they gave him pain medication. Now he is in the process of getting another opinion. But does anyone know any good exercises that can help relieve the pain?

Painkillers will only mask the pain and allow you to do more damage to it through use. (may help him sleep though)
Ice packs will reduce the swelling and help relieve some of the pressure. I use one to fall asleep at night, and one or two in the morning before doing anything.
I have more faith in chiropractors for this than medical doctors.

well.. you should try this exercises: one from A cathegory and 1 from B
.A. - one of theese:
1. laid with ur back on the floor , grab one of your knees with you hands and drag the leg to your chest until you arrive at ur forehead , then same move with the oher leg , then with both legs at the same time
2. layed on the floor make knee flexions and extension
repeat this several times(10 times for the begining) , this should help , don`t hurry , if it hurts a lot , do them until you feel comfortable , then try the next day. If you cand u should do them in the morning and evening.
.B. - one of theese :
1. laid back with ur sole on the ground , bend bouth ur knees on the left side, then on the right side , do this slowly until you feel comfortalbe . repeat .. like 10 times.. next day 15 times.. and so on …until you can bend them til you hit the floor
only one exercise here, because the other are to hard to explain
you(the girlfrind) can help him, make exercises with him. u make the first exercises with his body then let him do them alone.
