back pain while doing ab exercises?

anytime i try to do ab exercises, my lowewr back starts to hurt. it feels like i’m using my back muscles instead of my abs. any idea why? and what are some other exercises that wont do the same?

I get that too. I think it is b/c i am doing the exercise wrong. try putting a pillow under your back or something. That usually helps for me.

Try bending your legs at the knees. That will relieve pressure from your lower spine.
If you still have pain, then do leg lifts with knees slightly bent ONE LEG AT A TIME. Not both.

use a mat or put a pillow underneath, also do leg raises those work your abs.

This is a sure sign that you are not doing the exercise correctly. Before you start on the ab, you need to learn about the pelvic floor muscles and learn how to isolate all those muscles, in order to steady the hips. If the hips roll, then you will damage your back. I learned all this at Pilate’s and it was a good three months before I was even allowed to try any exercise, because it took me one hour once a week to learn how to isolate the muscle groups. Mind you once I managed it, sit ups, press ups, were so easy! In learning how to isolate the muscles you are in fact exercising them, so when you can first learn to zip them up to give stability to the hips, the rest really falls into place. Best of Luck
